3D Printed Chess Set

Concepts

Process

I had multiple concepts to choose from but I eventually ended up following through with the drinking glasses theme. I did work on the Ghibli character theme for a long time but I didn't think that the theme would be obvious enough for others to discern, and the shapes of the characters didn't really match up at all for what I wanted in my chess set, so I scraped that idea. I may print the characters on their own in my free time though, just for experimenting, and they seem like nice gifts to give.

Besides the theme not working out for the Ghibli concept, I also received feedback that the designs would use up a great amount of support structures, and with what little time we have for printing, that just wasn't ideal.

Overall, the drinking glasses seem to be the fastest, and most coherently themed concept within my concept sheet. I will probably work on some of the other concepts as well, just for fun and on my own time.

Some of the glasses are actually separated in the middle so that printing would go smoother, and less supports would have to be created, meaning that the print time would go faster. Although I say "faster" the estimation print time is still 8 hours total. (Not looking forward to that ...)

Not much to say on the actual process of these glasses. I drew them on a piece of paper and traced the drawing that I imported into Rhino. Then I just revolved, capped, offsetSrf them accordingly.

MeshMixer Attempts

These are just some Meshmixer attempts for the Ghibli themed concept. I worked for a bit on these designs and so I think they deserve to be put on the blog. It was fun trying to figure out how to model and sculpt these characters.
