Castle
Rhino Review: Castle
My name is Gwen, and I am a second year student in AuArts. I am majoring in Character Design and Illustration, and minoring in Animation. I was in OBDF 110 in my first year of studies, but I've forgotten how to do a lot of things in rhino, and have completely forgotten how to use the other 3D software... Hopefully, this time I won't forget how to operate the 3D software.

I generally used the rectangle, circle, and polygon tools in order to create most of the shapes. For the more complex shapes I combined the simple shape tools with either, boolean union, boolean difference and revolve. I had to freehand some of the shapes, for example, the doors and windows of the castle. The door and window shape was made by trimming or splitting, and joining a rectangle and a circle. For the rectangular wedges on the castle walls, I had to create extremely long rectangles so that it reached either side of the wall, and changed its location and orientation depending on which wall it was going to be on. Then, I made sure that both the wall and the rectangular shapes were intersecting and used boolean difference. I used revolve for the fun shaped towers along the corners of the big castle wall and on top of the castle flags. In order to move things around, I definitely relied on Osnap and, sometimes, the gumball tool.

Though I did want to add more details to the exterior and interior of the 3D model, I believe that this attempt at a castle was successful. I really like the wedges on the top of the castle walls, and am proud of the little stronghold in the middle of the castle. The trees are a nice touch as well. I am also happy with how the revolved shapes came out. They seem super ethereal and just adds interest to the model. On the other hand, I wish I had added more detail to the outside of the bigger wall. Maybe more windows or a place to hold cannonballs or mounted crossbows. I also wish I had added a more dynamic platform; instead of a flat rectangular surface, I could have added more texture (a hill, rocks, grass). I also wish I had utilized the twist command for some shapes. That would really have been interesting to see. Lastly, I really hope I finally stop relying on grid snap when I don't know where to snap objects.
